Capitol Hill has the oldest housing we clean, and old houses hold dirt in places new ones do not have. Picture rails, deep skirting, panelled doors, transom windows and plaster that has been painted a dozen times all collect dust on surfaces that are not flat. A clean that only covers the horizontal surfaces will look fine at eye level and dusty everywhere else, so on the Hill the high-to-low order matters more than anywhere else in the city.
Many of these houses also have a basement flat, either rented out or used by family. It is priced separately as its own home, because it has its own kitchen and bathroom and its own front door under the steps.

When to book it
Radiators, plaster and narrow stairs
Cast-iron radiators are the signature Capitol Hill dust trap. The fins hold a felt of dust that a vacuum nozzle cannot reach, so they get done by hand, and the wall and skirting behind them get done at the same time because that is where it lands. Original wood floors get a damp mop and never steam. Plaster walls get switch plates and door frames wiped rather than scrubbed, since the paint on them is often older than it looks.
The stairs in these houses are narrow, steep and often turn twice. That is not a problem, but it does mean a full clean of a four-bedroom here genuinely takes longer than the same size house in Bethesda. The flat rate already accounts for it. You are not charged more because your house is old.

What a standard clean covers
Every visit, every room, the same list, worked high to low. Radiators, sills, mouldings and stair spindles are part of it.
Kitchen
Counters, backsplash and sink scrubbed. Outside of every appliance. Cabinet fronts wiped. Floor washed by hand at the edges.
Bathrooms
Tub, shower, tile and grout line scrubbed. Toilet inside and out. Mirrors and fixtures polished streak free.
Bedrooms
Beds made with hotel corners. Surfaces dusted top to bottom. Under accessible furniture vacuumed.
Living areas
Dusted high to low, including sills, baseboards, blinds and switch plates. Upholstery vacuumed.

Vacuumed and mopped, with corners and edges done by hand instead of a machine pass.

Do you clean radiators?
Yes, by hand, along with the wall and skirting behind them. In a house with cast-iron radiators that is where most of the visible dust actually comes from.
My floors are original and unsealed in places. What do you use?
A damp mop, never wet, and never steam. Tell us in the notes which rooms are the fragile ones and the cleaner goes gentler there.
Can you clean the basement flat as well?
Yes, booked as its own home so it is priced by its own bedrooms and bathrooms. Mention that it is the same building and we will schedule the two together.
